Excess of Cortisol
Characterized by central obesity, unique weight gain through out the body, Cushing’s Syndrome is found in humans as well as domesticated dogs and horses. This is caused by raised Cortisol levels in the blood, which is an affect caused by taking certain drugs, or by tumors that excrete Cortisol. Often this is easily cured by surgery.
The most predominate symptom of this condition is weight gain. This is a very specific kind of fat build up, which is centrally located in the trunk of the body, as well as the face, while not affecting the arms and legs. Fat will also accumulate at the back of the neck, as well as on the collar bones. The skin may also become thin, in addition to increased sweating and muscle weakness. Because of the loss of skin density, it will cause hemorrhaging, leaving purple and red marks. Along with skin conditions, hair can also become brittle, causing baldness in some individuals. Insomnia and decreased labido is also present in patients suffering from Cushing’s Syndrome.
There are two different types of this condition, one is caused by hormones that originate from within the body, and the other from hormones that originate without. Cushing’s Syndrome that is caused by external hormones, is often due to a prescribed drug used to treat other medical conditions. The other is a result of the pituitary gland and the body’s own balance. It is also possible for Cortisol levels to be abnormally high due to a tumor that produces it.
As for curing this condition, the treatment will depend on the cause. If a steroid medication is causing the Cortisol levels to be unbalanced, weaning off this drug will clear up the condition. Surgery can remove the gland that is the cause as well. If the patient does not desire surgery, there are medications that can inhibit the Cortisol production.
Here are some basic symptoms to help you determine if you are suffering from this condition: mood swings, depression, weak muscles and bones, abnormal sleeping patterns, high blood sugar levels, balding, and cholesterol conditions. Women may also experience changes in their menstrual cycle and men will become less fertile. Talk with your doctor if you are experiencing several symptoms listed above, in addition to the specific weight gain mentioned before. Only a licensed professional can accurately diagnose and treat your condition. Contact your doctor for more information about this condition and what it means for your health.
